HARLEY-DAVIDSON CREATES NEW ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
R&D FACILITY IN SILICON VALLEY

Company is Recruiting Top EV Talent to Build its Capabilities for New Products and Segments

Harley Future EV Collage.jpg

MILWAUKEE (Sept. 5, 2018) – Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) announced today it will establish a new research and development facility in Northern California to support its future product portfolio, including the company’s first complete line of electric vehicles.

“Recently we shared with the world our accelerated plans to build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders globally,” said Matt Levatich, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “This new R&D facility in the heart of Silicon Valley will help us deliver on those plans and demonstrate our commitment to lead the electrification of the sport.”

In July, Harley-Davidson shared details of its “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” growth plan. Through this accelerated plan, the company is expanding the Harley-Davidson community through new products, broader access and stronger dealers.

As part of that strategy, Harley-Davidson will launch its first electric motorcycle, LiveWire™, in 2019. That motorcycle will be the first in a broad, no-clutch “twist and go” portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed by the company. It will be followed by additional models through 2022 to broaden the portfolio with lighter, smaller and even more accessible product options to inspire new riders with new ways to ride.

The new facility in California, which will serve as a satellite of the Willie G. Davidson Product Development Facility in Wauwatosa, Wis., is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2018. It will initially focus on electric vehicle research and development, including battery, power electronics and e-machine design, development and advanced manufacturing. Long term, the company may consider expanding the center’s focus to an increased range of advanced technologies that uniquely leverage the rich talent in the Silicon Valley and support its most comprehensive and competitive lineup of motorcycles across a broad spectrum of price points, power sources and riding styles.

The company has already begun recruiting top talent in electrical, mechanical and software engineering, with experience in developing and delivering a wide variety of EV systems from design through production. The facility will initially employ a staff of approximately 25, most of which the company intends to hire from within the Silicon Valley area.

“This is an exciting time in Harley-Davidson’s incredible history, and it’s also an exciting time to join our company and help shape our future,” said Levatich.

NASA ENGINEER VOTED GRAND PRIZE WINNER

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE’S “THE WRENCH: SCOUT BOBBER BUILD OFF

Alfredo Juarez of Las Cruces, New Mexico to be Awarded $10,000 & a Feature Story in

Hot Bike Magazine on his Custom Indian Scout Bobber

MINNEAPOLIS (August 21, 2018) – Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, today announced its grand prize winner of The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off. Alfredo (Fred) Juarez, a NASA engineer from Las Cruces, NM, and his custom Indian Scout Bobber received the most fan votes and has been named grand prize winner of the national contest. As the grand prize winner, Juarez will be awarded $10,000 and will receive a feature story in Hot Bike magazine on his custom Indian Scout Bobber.

Juarez’s bare-bones chopper, featuring a completely custom hardtail frame, drew inspiration by a number of different mechanical works of art, both in and out of the motorcycle industry. Juarez sites the Indian Scout FTR1200 Custom, RSD Indian Scout custom builds and David Beckham’s garage company, Knuckle, as inspiration.

“I cannot thank Indian Motorcycle enough for the opportunity. Not only was this a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but the three-month build period created an incredible bonding experience for me and my family,” said Juarez. “And of course, thanks to all the fans who took the time to cast their vote. I know it wasn’t easy to pick one because the other two bikes are incredible. Hats off to PJ and Christian for their work. It’s been an incredible ride and I cannot thank everyone enough for their support.”

The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off was a national custom motorcycle contest designed to spotlight non-professional builders who wrench for the passion and not the pay. The program received more than 100 submissions, which were narrowed down to 12 by a judging panel of professional builders and experts, including Roland Sands, Satya Kraus, Jason Paul Michaels and Hot Bike Editor-in-Chief Jordan Mastagni. After a two-week fan vote, Juarez, along with PJ Grakauskas (an OSHA safety inspector from Avon, OH) and Christian Newman (a mechanical engineer from Buffalo, NY) were named the three finalists. All three builds were unveiled on August 5 at the legendary Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

“Since the beginning of this program, our goal was to highlight the passion and the craftsmanship of garage builders from around the country,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director for Indian Motorcycle. “Needless to say, our expectations were vastly exceeded. Fred, Christian and PJ exemplify what this program is all about. And in turn, we hope it motivates and encourages others from around the country.”

Juarez’s grand prize-winning custom Indian Scout Bobber can be found on IndianMotorcycle.com and on future pages of Hot Bike magazine. All three bikes will tour a variety of motorcycle shows and events with Indian Motorcycle for the remainder of the year and into 2019. At the conclusion of the tour, each bike will be returned to the builder.

Riders for Health & RedBud MXoN

Saving Lives Via Two Wheels

Bringing all of the world’s greatest riders to one location will provide a great opportunity to give back on a large scale. 100% of the proceeds from your purchases will be donated to the Riders for Health organization.

With the 71st MXoN quickly approaching and its return to US soil, I wanted to create an opportunity to give back to an organization that makes an impact globally through motorcycles. The host track, Redbud, also known as America’s motocross track, is a track I have grown up racing and riding since I was ten years old. For most of us, motocross and motorcycles are a luxury we have to just get away and enjoy ourselves. For others, in the case of rural Africa, a motorcycle can truly be a lifeline to valuable and much need vaccines and medications. The motorcycle is the key component in making deliveries in these rural roadless areas.

A non-profit organization called, Riders for Health, is bridging that gap between what motorcycles can truly accomplish outside of just being for leisure. Their mission is to provide a world in which health care reaches everyone, everywhere. The organization helps with vehicle management, service, and training for health care professionals.

4.JPG

So, for this year’s MXoN at my local track of Redbud, I created these simple and minimal t-shirts for the event. Two designs, the first being America’s motocross track and the second being The World’s motocross track

For this one weekend in a small Michigan town, Redbud will transform into the world’s motocross track and we are all one global community. Bringing all of the world’s greatest riders to one location will provide a great opportunity to give back on a large scale. 100% of the proceeds from your purchases will be donated to the Riders for Health organization.

“THE WRENCH: SCOUT BOBBER BUILD OFF” AT STURGIS BUFFALO CHIP

Final Fan Vote to Determine $10,000 Grand Prize Winner of National Custom Motorcycle Competition

NEWMAN_RTPROFILE_HERO_1059-t.jpg

STURGIS, SD (August 6, 2018) –Indian Motorcycle unveiled its final three custom builds from The Wrench: Scout Bobber Build Off at the legendary Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The national custom motorcycle competition, which was designed to spotlight non-professional builders who wrench for the passion and not the pay, awarded three finalists with a 2018 Indian Scout Bobber and a $10,000 build budget. Each builder had three months to turn their stock motorcycle in to one-off works of custom motorcycle art.

A judging panel of professional builders and experts, including Roland Sands, Satya Kraus, Jason Paul Michaels and Hot Bike Editor-in-Chief Jordan Mastagni selected 12 semi-finalists from more than 100 submissions.  Each semi-finalist was showcased online for a fan vote to determine the three finalists. After viewing sketches and renderings, the fan-favorites that arose included a NASA engineer from Las Cruces, NM, an OSHA safety inspector from Avon, OH, and a mechanical engineer from Buffalo, NY.

“These builders blew us away with their commitment to the program, their build and overall finished product,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director for Indian Motorcycle. “Each one of them made significant sacrifices and adjustments to their daily lives. They put in countless hours, long nights and a ton of work to meet the deadline. We cannot thank them enough for their time, energy and investment into the program.”

The three finished Scout Bobber custom motorcycles are currently showcased on IndianMotorcycle.com. Fans have until August 16th to vote for their favorite and help select the grand prize winner, who will be announced via social media on August 21st.

JUAREZ_BUILDER_1086-t.jpg

Alfredo, aka Fred, is a NASA engineer based in Las Cruces, N.M. He started wrenching at the age of 12, but his fabrication journey began in college, building bikes and hot rods for his friends, and making all of the tools and tables he needed to do the job right. He spends his work days building things like flammability testing chambers, which makes the complex designs and ideas he drew up for this build seem simple.

INSPIRATION:

Fred has been inspired by a number of different mechanical works of art, both in and out of the motorcycle industry. Among the things that drew his inspiration were the Indian Scout FTR1200 Custom, RSD Indian Scout Customs and David Beckham’s garage company, Knuckle.

I’m proud of the final product, not only for all the work I’ve put into it, but for all the work my family has put in and the sacrifices they have made to allow me to focus on this over the last three months. My dad’s time and support on this project has allowed my daughter to spend quality time with her grandpa. My wife painted the tank, which she’s never done before, but we had all the confidence considering her creative talents. My family and I are so very thankful for this opportunity and we’d like to thank all those involved on making this dream a reality.”

CUSTOMIZER:  Christian Newman –  Age 36 | Buffalo, NY

NEWMAN_BUILDER_1071-t.jpg

Christian, a mechanical engineer of mining equipment from upstate New York, is an incredibly creative amateur builder who shook up the chopper scene with his recent build of a 1940 V-twin fabricated almost entirely out of stainless steel. He uses many old-world techniques which are more painstaking than most modern methods but require a more intensive attention to detail and higher level of craftsmanship.

INSPIRATION:

Christian’s build is inspired by old school choppers from the 1960’s and 1980’s. For this project, Christian utilized some of the signature elements of his design style, including “throwback” features, like his handmade Crazy Frank rear fender and polished aluminum finishes throughout.

BUILDER STATEMENT:

“This experience is sort of surreal because it put me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to work with less of a budgetary constraint, as I always build bikes with my own cash.  It’s flattering that I was chosen and I am very thankful. I was a little apprehensive about my build when it first began.  I’m not used to using a largely unmodified frame or motor, so I was worried that the bike wouldn’t feel like I’d done anything significant, but I’ve wound up replacing almost every piece on it besides those two major components, so it really feels like mine.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ACCELERATES STRATEGY

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ACCELERATES STRATEGY TO

BUILD NEXT GENERATION OF RIDERS GLOBALLY

“More Roads to Harley-Davidson” Includes New Products in Additional Motorcycle Segments, Broader Access and Commitment to Strengthen Dealers

MILWAUKEE (July 30, 2018) – To inspire even more people around the world to experience the exhilaration of riding a motorcycle, Harley-Davidson today shared details of its “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” growth plan through 2022.

In a fast-changing world with new consumer demands, these accelerated actions support Harley-Davidson’s 2027 objectives with increased focus and strategic investment to reinvigorate the U.S. business while accelerating the pace of international growth.

“The bold actions we are announcing today leverage Harley-Davidson’s vast capabilities and competitive firepower – our excellence in product development and manufacturing, the global appeal of the brand and of course, our great dealer network,” said Matt Levatich, president and chief executive officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Alongside our existing loyal riders, we will lead the next revolution of two-wheeled freedom to inspire future riders who have yet to even think about the thrill of riding.”

The result of a comprehensive, top-to-bottom assessment incorporating a “customer first” perspective, the More Roads to Harley-Davidson plan includes:

New Products – keep current riders engaged and inspire new riders by extending heavyweight leadership and unlocking new markets and segments

Broader Access – meet customers where they are and how they want to engage with a multi-channel retail experience

Stronger Dealers – drive a performance framework to improve dealer financial strength and the Harley-Davidson customer experience

“We expect this plan will result in an engaged, expanded Harley-Davidson community with a more diverse rider base, along with industry-leading margins and cash flow,” said Levatich.

New Products

Leveraging its industry-leading design and strong manufacturing capabilities, Harley-Davidson plans to offer its most comprehensive lineup of motorcycles, competing in many of the largest and fastest growing segments with a full portfolio of motorcycles across a broad spectrum of price points, power sources, displacements, riding styles and global markets. Highlights include:

Extending the company’s leadership in heavyweight motorcycles by continuing to develop improved, more technologically-advanced Touring and Cruiser motorcycles that will keep existing Harley-Davidson riders engaged and riding longer.

Introducing a new modular 500cc to 1250cc middleweight platform of motorcycles that spans three distinct product spaces and four displacements, starting with the company’s first Adventure Touring motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson™ Pan America™ 1250, a 1250cc Custom model and a 975cc Streetfighter model, all of which are planned to launch beginning in 2020. Additional models to broaden coverage in these product spaces will follow through 2022.

Developing a more accessible, small-displacement (250cc to 500cc) motorcycle for Asia emerging markets through a planned strategic alliance with a manufacturer in Asia.  This new product and broader distribution is intended to fuel Harley-Davidson’s customer access and growth in India, one of the largest, fastest growing markets in the world, and other Asia markets.

Leading the electric motorcycle market by launching Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle, LiveWire™, in 2019 -- the first in a broad, no-clutch “twist and go” portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of the sport. LiveWire will be followed by additional models through 2022 to broaden the portfolio with lighter, smaller and even more accessible product options to inspire new riders with new ways to ride.

Broader Access

Harley-Davidson will advance its market delivery approach and meet today’s customer needs by:

Creating high-engagement customer experiences across all retail channels – including improving and expanding the company’s global digital capabilities by evolving the Harley-Davidson.com experience to integrate with and enhance the dealership retail experience for existing and new customers.

Establishing strategic alliances with global leading e-commerce providers to extend access to Harley-Davidson to a pool of millions of potential new customers.

New retail formats -- including smaller, urban storefronts globally to expose the brand to urban populations and drive sales of the expanded Harley-Davidson product portfolio and expand international apparel distribution.

Stronger Dealers

Harley-Davidson’s world-class dealer network is an integral part of the company’s accelerated strategy and critical to overall success. The company will implement a performance framework to significantly enhance the strength of the dealer network and the customer experience, enabling the best-performing and most entrepreneurial dealers to drive innovation and success for themselves and Harley-Davidson -- while providing the premium customer experience the brand is known for across an increasingly diverse product and customer base.

“Harley-Davidson is iconic because we’ve never been static,” said Levatich. “In moving forward, we are tapping into the spirit that drove our founders back in 1903 and every one of the employees and dealers who rose to the challenges faced along the way.  Our plan will redefine existing boundaries of our brand – reaching more customers in a way that reinforces all we stand for as a brand and as a company and we can’t wait to kick it into gear.”

Funding & Financials

In addition to building riders, the company expects More Roads to Harley-Davidson to create more value, stabilize and strengthen the existing business, improve Harley-Davidson Motor Company Return on Invested Capital (ROIC), increase revenue and earnings, and allow the company to return more cash to shareholders.

The accelerated strategy will require significant investment to change the trajectory of the business globally, and the company plans to fund it entirely through comprehensive cost reduction and reallocation of previously planned investment and resources including operating investment through 2022 of $450 to $550 million and capital investment through 2022 of $225 to $275 million.  In total, the company plans More Roads to Harley-Davidson to generate more than $1 billion of incremental annual revenue in 2022 as compared to 2017.

The company believes its accelerated strategy is in line with and reinforces its objectives to drive revenue growth and expand operating margins.  The company expects to fund strategic opportunities while maintaining its current investment and return profile and capital allocation strategy.

Harley-Davidson’s funding principles will focus on stabilizing and strengthening the existing business, enhancing the premium brand, and investments in profitable, growth-oriented projects. We expect these principles, along with a disciplined capital allocation focus, will allow Harley-Davidson to execute with improved cost competitiveness and overhead efficiencies.

Indian Motorcycle privateers Jeffrey Carver Jr. (Roof-Systems, Indian of Metro Milwaukee) and Henry Wiles (Bandit Industries/Wilco Racing/Willy Built) rounded out the all-Scout FTR750 podium with second and third-place finishes, respectively.

Mees was seeking redemption on Saturday night at the Lima Half-Mile as this was the only race he did not finish on the podium in the 2017 season. Determined, Mees edged out the competition early in the race and held the lead throughout the Main. Carver bolted to the second position and managed to close the gap between him and Mees in the second half of the race, but Mees was able to maintain his lead and further his lead in the 2018 points standings

“I’ve had my sights on winning Lima ever since last year. This is a tough track and getting this win is especially meaningful for me,” said Mees.  “I have to thank my team who does an incredible job at keeping my Indian Scout FTR750 in top form.”

In his first race on the Indian Scout FTR750, Indian Motorcycle privateer Briar Bauman (Zanotti Racing/Roof Systems/Western Powersports) finished fourth. Wrecking Crew rider Brad Baker battled his way to his seventh top-five finish of the season.

“The Lima Half-Mile is one of the most challenging races of the year, and we’re thrilled to see another Scout FTR750 podium sweep,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “This was a momentous win for Mees in what has been an exceptional season for him and Indian Motorcycle Racing.”

Through 10 races, Mees continues to control the leaderboard with 220 points, while Wiles sits in second with 153 points and Baker in third with 130 points. Carver, Kenny Coolbeth Jr. (Nila Racing/Columbia Avionics), Bauman and Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith rank fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

The Indian Wrecking Crew and stable of privateers aboard the Scout FTR750 will continue its season on July 7th at the New York Short Track. CAKE, the Swedish manufacturer of lightweight electric off-road performance motorcycles, today announced pre-order is now available for the production series of its first model, Kalk, after delivering the first of the Limited Edition series just last week.

Built with a purpose to inspire people to contribute to speeding up the transition towards sustainability by enhancing fun and excitement, the all-electric high-performance off-road motorcycle is designed for exploration and discovery, allowing riders to travel as far as 50 miles, and as fast as 50 miles per hour, with the single charge of its battery. First launched this past January at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Denver, the Kalk was recognized as “Best in Show” by several outdoor industry publications.

“When I first started riding electric off-road bikes a few years back, I was caught by the qualities and aspects of exploring the backcountry quietly and without pollution. I have been on a mission ever since,” says Stefan Ytterborn, founder and CEO of CAKE. ”With a clear mission to contribute speeding up the transition towards a zero emission society, CAKE aims to turn the motorized two-wheeled future upside down.”

In April, CAKE announced its partnership with Swedish all-green electricity provider Utellus to create solar installations specifically designed to charge CAKE’s electric motorcycles, known as the CAKE Solar Power Charging System. By May, CAKE was honored to receive Teknikföretagen’s Grand Award of Design, a prestigious award created to draw attention to commercial successes that have been facilitated by integrated and consistent design efforts.

“It’s somewhat unreal being at this stage,” continues Ytterborn. “The highly competent and committed people on our team have worked hard to define this new category, demonstrating what light, clean, and quiet electric performance off-road bikes can be. To see the response we’ve gotten so far, and to have the Production series available for pre-order is an amazing feeling.”

The Kalk costs $13,000 USD, and is now available now for pre-order on ridecake.com with a deposit of $1,000 USD. Bikes will be delivered from Christmas onwards.
